A Road Not Ventured
 |
The road in this
realism
painting is
worn with deep ruts; where the road goes is obscured in hazes. Starr
paints this concealing vapor with seeming brilliance, not dark and
dreary. She expresses her feeling, that going forward into the unknown
is scary, with possible failure, yet it is exciting and adventuresome.
The ruts make it hard and difficult.
The road
in this painting
has distinct sides. Starr's
realist
painting shows obvious self-discipline and determination.
She feels going straight ahead without being side tracked is important
if she can muster the courage and the strength, if not there is
a gate that allows escape.
The trees are generally barren without leaves, |
with the exception of the front right tree, which is beautifully adorned. When we go to the unknown we feel exposed, unsure, threatened or without leaves.

Gazebo
 |
The Two young ladies in
this realism
painting represent Starr and her sister Betty. Although nearly nine years apart,
Starr paints Betty and herself the same age. When Starr was three years old she remembers Betty taking her by the hand and walking in the Mediterranean Sea (then living in Italy for a year).
Starr felt loved and secure in her sister's hands. When four years of age Starr loved to dress up and make believe. It was refuge from her imperfect childhood (the holes and tears in the clothing). |
The lace and ribbon represent her femininity. It embodies grace. White stands for pureness. Although quite young, the china relates to the lace, but it expresses other qualities of becoming a young woman! China has distinct boundaries of self-discipline, purpose, capable, purity with dignity. Raggedy Andy was loved cared for nursed, and adored, the red on Andy symbolizes love and nourishment.
The green apples
in this realist painting represent rejuvenation and good health, the flowers relate to the celebration
of being a woman, to love and be loved. Starr used to play at her
uncles, and aunts, homes. They were incased in trees, flowers and coves to hide in. Starr loved books with stories of horses. They were her refuge. She would dream of white horses and fry to the stars above. |
